Project:  Residence Halls Mater Plan, Remodel, and Renovations

Like many universities, AU had an adequate but aging base of campus residence halls. After a comprehensive study, krM created a phased plan of implementing a Residence Hall Upgrade program.  An emphasis was placed on re-using what was important and feasible and changing those items that were a barrier to the quality of student life.

Beginning with the study of the six residence halls on campus, we evaluated everything from suitability as a draw to students, to the quality of the mechanical systems, code compliance, and energy consumption. After the study, AU embarked on a phased renovation process for each of the residence halls.

Three of the six have now been completed.  The projects were designed in the last half of the year and bids were solicited in December. The timing allowed the award of contracts in January and early purchase of materials and equipment. All the disruptive work was completed during the summer break allowing students to return to newly renovated residences in the Fall without loss of facility use. These facilities have been enlarged for more gathering spaces, re-organized to meet student life styles and upgraded internally. New mechanical systems, finishes, access, controls, lighting, technology, furnishings, and more were replaced.
