Project: krM Headquarters
Purpose: Adaptive Re-Use and Renovation
This 1910 facility was originally Anderson’s central Post Office. Around 1975, the Anderson School System acquired the building and used it to house their administrative offices. By 1986, a renovation was in order. This project included restoring the restrooms, lobby, and exterior facades as well as adding new landscaping, two stairwells, an elevator, windows, heating system, roof, and interior finishes. To create a nice outdoor space and a landscape barrier to the alley, a brick walkway leading to an eating area was designed. Throughout the renovation process, the integrity of the building’s original design was upheld.
In 2003, krM purchased the building with Ricker Oil Company, and transformed the 2nd floor into our new office headquarters. Our design was driven by adapting the original building to a new use and assuring its sustainability for the future. Gutting the entire 2nd floor, we exposed the original windows, terrazzo flooring and even some of the steel structure. As a result, we enjoy an open space flooded with natural light, dressed with new furniture and finishes, and appreciate the heritage the building represents.
