Project:  Big Four Train Depot
Purpose:  Train Depot Restoration

Anchoring the south edge of downtown Anderson, the Big Four Train Station was a restoration project that was a part of the larger Florentine Project, an endeavor to restore Meridian Street.  In order to accurately restore this station, an original drawing set containing drawings from 1894 and its remodel in 1945 was included with our new proposed drawings.  A major portion of funding came from a committed ISTEA grant.  Proper coordination of this project with the Florentine Project was important to smoothly allocate resources.  The building was carefully restored to comply with state and federal guidelines while at the same time designed for a new use.  Currently, the Anderson Young Ballet Academy and Butler’s Pantry occupy the station.  The space functions dually as a dance studio and a banquet facility. Butler’s Pantry offers convenient catering services for parties and receptions as well as providing a snack/break area for ballet students who spend long hours at the academy. The prior dilapidated building is now accessible, well used, and a historic landmark for the community.
